Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option out there! Unlike dental bridges and traditional dentures, they replace the roots of the missing teeth, allowing for all sorts of different benefits. This includes additional comfort, stability, and longevity. They also have an astonishing success rate of over 95%! However, dental implant failure can still occur if you aren’t careful. Here’s what you should know about preventing them.

What Is the Cause of Dental Implant Failure?

There are multiple different reasons why dental implants can fail. Here are the most common:

  • Peri-Implantitis: The most common reason behind dental implant failure is peri-implantitis. This is an infection that develops around the implant and surrounding gum tissue. This can be caused by poor dental hygiene during the recovery period.
  • Jawbone Loss: Bone loss happens when you’re missing teeth. This is because the root of the missing tooth isn’t there to stimulate the bone with regular chewing. When a dental implant is placed in an area where there isn’t enough bone tissue, it may not properly fuse to the jawbone. This is why bone grafting is often required before getting implants.
  • Dental Trauma: If you’ve experienced an injury or blow to the mouth, you could end up with a dislodged dental implant.

How Can Dental Implant Failure Be Avoided?

Dental implant failure is sometimes out of your control, but other times, it can be prevented. Here are some ways to keep your implants strong and healthy:

  • Excellent Oral Hygiene: Dental implants aren’t susceptible to decade, but you still need to maintain excellent oral hygiene. Having healthy gum tissue and surrounding teeth are crucial to keeping your implants healthy. Make sure that you are brushing twice and flossing once daily. Rinse with mouthwash for additional freshness.
  • See Your Dentist: By visiting your dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups, they can check and ensure that your dental implants are in excellent health and healing efficiently. If any issues pop up, they can be addressed sooner rather than later.
  • Don’t Use Tobacco Products: Smoking interferes with the healing process after dental implant placement surgery. You should refrain from smoking for at least a few months after your procedure.
  • Increase Calcium Intake: Calcium is needed for maintaining strong bones. This is a mineral that can be found in milk, yogurt, broccoli, oranges, and cheese.
  • Avoid Bad Habits: Don’t munch down on hard candies or chew on ice. Ask your dentist about getting a nightguard if you clench or grind your teeth at night.

Dental implant failure is unlikely, but it can happen! By using the tips listed above, you can reduce your risks and experience the benefits of your dental implants for a long time!
